Although this is my extent of experiences in or about New Orleans outside of the news, this is a really good show with lots of music (jazz/blues) and some cultural exchange into a once thriving demographic now on the mend.

Yet another different tv show. Hill Street Blues, you’ve come a long way, baby! Bochco, that is... I sheepily admit I only saw season 1 of “The Wire” cause I dropped cable. Got to get back... Anyway, this guy Dave Simon has got to be in the top very small group of smartest, most creative dudes in tv. And tv is the tops of a/v, and how. Different show—no freakin’ plot, ok. So what can go on you ask......Well, don’t ask ‘joeguy’, I guess. A great post, but, ??? I won’t get into fascism in music, a whole big thing in itself. Yeah, a little preachy about NO and the ‘man-made’ not natural catastrophy, but so what? It’s all done so tastefully, just like a fried bbq’d shrimp po’boy. “I’ve just gotta......!” Music Fascism. Hmm...Most people.... Quoting Simon, NO is the northernmost Caribbean Music city and it is so GREAT to have GOOD music in a show. ‘Most music’.... It is serious there and it emphasizes the Oriental Way, music for all folks all the time. Forget the capitalistic selling of body and soul for ‘prison food’/prison existence. Or, as the jazz trumpet son of the Indian Chief bass player says when offered to tour to Portland, OR, “Well, it’s clean out there, but man, they applaud on the 1 and 3.” Meaning that the beat is masculine and martial, not up beat like dub reggae and other cool soundings rarely heard, rarely paid. The show is deftly done in all ways so you just have to like it unless you just can’t. All music is live ambiently recorded in the scene you are watching by the actual musicians except the main character on Trombone (and he is dubbed nicely). End of last episode season 1: funeral of someone you know and feel badly about, outdoor procession with musicians (as usual) w/a second line (dancers and everyone else and you) the main chararacters start dancing as they walk, finally the lead female griever dances, too. Like watching Ted Kennedy’s beautiful widow live at the church funeral in Boston, we see it. We see beauty exhibit Truth; we see transcendence, the Blues lives. And it is common in NO and on this show.

This is an amazing series. We do not have HBO so had to wait for the DVD to come out but it is well worth the wait. One word of advice, it takes a while to get into the series because of its particular pacing and mostly because of the language. A lot of the scenes in episode 1 were almost not understandable because of the familiar language used and the rapid switch between the intertwined stories. But hang in there and you will be rewarded. After listening to the music and the language for a while it will suddenly "click" and you will get hooked. There are great actors, all of them, great music, laughing and celebrating in the face of adversity is the greatest cure for all evils. Next thing you know you will be booking a trip to NO to keep in the mood. I can't wait for season 2 on DVD!

It is refreshing to watch a series that is life affirming and more about community, relationship and music than about murder and car chases.

Definitely not my bowl of jambalaya. Don't like the music and don't empathize with the characters. They're rapturous about visual, audio and mental noise. Mother nature tried silencing them. They 'won't bow cos' they don't know how.' Could they at least slow down on the murder, thievery, noise pollution, adultery and all THAT jazz? Remember, culture can be a symphony or a stool sample.

At the beginning of season one of Treme it's three month after Katrina left the city in ruins. The series follows the main characters as they adjust to NO's devastation and getting their lives back to normal as much as possible. Another main focus is the NO jazz scene. Several main characters are musicians and the episodes feature their performances in clubs and in the French Quarter. The storyline is slow to develop but picks up as the season progresses. There is a lot of music as well as excellent drama.

Fantastic - must watch series - I can't wait for the second season. Those writers really have it. You care about those weird characters and have to know what's going to happen to them.
